A Letter of Credit (LC) is a written undertaking by a bank (the issuing bank) on behalf of an applicant (the buyer/importer), to pay a beneficiary (the seller/exporter) a sum of money upon presentation of documents that comply with the terms and conditions of the credit. Governed by UCP 600 — the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits, published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) — the LC is one of the most secure instruments in international trade finance.
Under UCP 600, banks deal with documents, not goods. This means the bank examines documents on their face to determine whether they appear to constitute a complying presentation under Article 14. A discrepancy — even a minor one — can give the issuing bank grounds to refuse payment, which is why accurate, compliant drafting is critical.
Discrepia's LC generator walks you through every required field — applicant, beneficiary, amount, currency, available with/by, drafts at, port of loading/discharge, latest shipment date, goods description, and required documents — and validates the result against 18 UCP 600 checks before you export. This catches missing mandatory articles, inconsistent dates, and incomplete document requirements before the LC reaches the issuing bank.
