What is a documentary collection?

A documentary collection is a payment method in international trade where the seller (the principal) entrusts the collection of payment to their bank (the remitting bank), which sends the commercial and financial documents to the buyer's bank (the collecting bank) with instructions to release them against payment (D/P) or acceptance (D/A). Unlike a Letter of Credit, the banks do not guarantee payment — they only handle the documents and follow the collection instructions.

URC 522 — the ICC Uniform Rules for Collections — governs documentary collections. It defines the responsibilities of the banks, the types of collections, the handling of instructions, and the liability framework. Because collections are simpler and cheaper than LCs, they are widely used where the trading parties have an established relationship and the risk of non-payment is acceptable.
